What is ABA?

Did You Know?: In the state of Texas, insurance companies are mandated to pay for ABA therapy. See Autism Speaks for more information.

What is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)?

Applied Behavior Analysis is the study of behavior and the application of conditioning techniques to modify it. Behavior Analysts seek to intervene to modify behavior. Afterward, the Behavior Analyst monitors the results of the intervention to ensure that it is responsible for the modification of behavior. Although this sounds quite simple and intuitive, it takes years to master this practice.

How effective is ABA therapy?

According to the Autism Support Network, ABA is “widely recognized as the single most effective therapy for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder…” Because of this, the State of Texas requires that insurance companies cover ABA therapy. How should you choose your therapist?

When choosing ABA services, make sure that you are choosing a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) or Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA). These Analysts are the only ones qualified to provide ABA therapy and undergo years of college studies and hundreds of hours of supervision. Click here to see the rigorous standards. Because of the effectiveness of ABA therapy, some people claim to provide ABA therapy, but are not qualified to do so.
